The neighborhood I live in has been super quiet the whole year-and-a-bit I’ve lived there
and nobody really bothers locking their doors or anything and unattended motorcycles are a common sight so I figured it was pretty low-key. Being a block from a police station probably has something to do with it. Then on Friday a bunch of tools got stolen from a business two blocks away, I saw a truck hauling an obviously-stolen motorcycle (Yamaha R6 just tossed in the bed with a haphazard single ratchet strap holding it down, front fairings getting TRASHED because it was laid over onto the toolbox) past my apartment, then Saturday I broke through the haze enough to finally clean the apartment up a bit (we gotta drink less soda holy shit) and my neighbor approached me saying some dude blitzed out of his mind tried to get into her apartment while she was home and was messing with the Sportcross. So that’s lovely. Wife is freaked out in typical fashion and doesn’t want to take the dog out on her own any more. Great good love it.
Lease is up so I can bounce whenever. Issue is having a large dog means finding rentals is tough even though she’s a sweetie who doesn’t dig into carpet, scratch doors, etc. at all. Ideally I’d find a duplex set up the right way (garages separating the living spaces. Seriously why would you build one any other way?) but the dog thing is tough and I’ve been biding my time. With how frequently I’ve been getting raises my budget might suddenly go up and I don’t wanna be stuck renting trap house when I could have afforded a shithole. That’d be a real bummer.
Happy miat for your time and a reminder that stock NA springs are trash and should immediately be replaced with literally anything else. A whoopie cushion, perhaps.

A friend of mine lives closer the the woods and has occasional bear sightings so she carries bear spray when walking her dogs . Different neighborhood , sounds like same solution.

LOL, now that was timely. I bought a 7.5 acre property where wildlife abounds, it seemed sensible to have some sort of protection. So I bought a Mossburg 500 shotgun 8 weeks ago. I still haven’t take it out of the case or learned much about how it works (watched a coup le of YouTube video s) . My wife reminded me that it’s not much good to us if I don’ t have a clue how to use it. I’m so fucking Ca nadian..

I have my PAL, but have yet to actually fire a gun. I do want a 500 though.

We have a super basic Mossberg 500. I’d like to get a shorter barrel and stubby stock for it and some nonlethal rounds because as it is it’s more useful to beat someone over the head with in a home defense situation.

NL is a good way to go. If someone gets the 500 off you, you’ve provided a weapon for your own murder.
In Canada you cannot use firearms for defence, but you know...you could. I’d rather be in prison than dead.

NL is just the only way to go for home defense unless bath salts are common in your area and someone can somehow ignore 50% of their torso becoming a bruise. Less legal repercussions (though I’m not sure if Kansas is a stand your ground state or what), less chance of collateral, etc.
These look like they’ll fuck someone’s day up.

If you are worried about shooting through walls just use bird shot. At that range it will wreck the perps day badly and your neighbors are safe.

As someone who lives in a “stand your ground” state, m y thought process is to ignore “stand your ground ” and go right for the “castle defense. ” I’m holing up in the bedroom, calling 911, and keeping the gun pointed at the door. I know enough to know that trying to clear my house is a huge risk. I am not trained for that, police are. Now if someone wants to get into the bedroom that’s another story. And possibly where I’d diverge on the non-lethal vs. lethal ammo. At that point if they are trying to get into the bedroom and I’ve announced I’m armed and called the cops and they still want in, I’m fearing for my life. But I’m also not looking for a fight. T here’s nothing in my house worth me risking my life to try and look like a macho badass because I’m not.

Read all the manuals, seek out professional training, and get to the range as much as possible. The thing about shooting is, in my opinion, it’s not like riding a bike. If I get on my bicycle after 20 years of not riding and I fall down, oh well. I might bruise my knee. But if relying on a gun as a means of defense and am rusty with it, fumbling around could be the difference between life and death.
I shoot weekly, though I also coach a small bore rifle and air rifle team, so I have that opportunity. For most people that’s not an option. But try to get out there once a month, once every 2 months. Don’t be the guy that buys the gun, shoots it once, and then forgets where he puts it.

Is PAL a Canadian gun license?

Find a local skeet club! I did skeet/trap for a few years and it is an absolute blast.

Ahh, I couldn’t figure out what the acronym was.
I have to admit that I’m pretty ignorant of Canadian gun laws.

Any kind of competitive shooting is awesome. I used to shoot in a few local sporting clay tournaments , have shot a few IPSC pistol matches, shoot bullseye matches at my gun club, and shoot a 3-gun every year.

Yeah. I was playing along with their newness. It’s a really bad idea to come to my house with bad intentions. I have 0 neighbors. The two big farm guard dogs give us ample warning to select the proper caliber. 300 wm for those situations where a 1/4 mile is getting too close.
Bird shot does work awesome at close range and it is really cheap at the Walmart’s. I prefer number 6 3” shells.

I know, I’m just kidding. About the shotgun thing. Shotguns are great when properly employed and loaded. Birdshot is great, even a medium shot like #6 is good and doesn’t overpenetrate excessively. But, the number one thing people forget is that shotguns don’t work like the movies - they don’t project a wide “cone of death” and don’t send bad guys flying backards. You still need to be reasonably accurate with them and people need to pattern their guns!

Honestly, get a flashlight for it instead of a stock. Much more useful.

I mean, you should clean your guns. Maybe not every time you shoot, but you should.
